![]() ![]() In essence, this moment would signify an unearthing of another part of Joseph 's past, and trigger another voiceover about his difficult history. When I walked over to it, I would find twinkling collectible stars, or a beacon marking something the fox could dig up. Often, a glint of light in the distance would catch my eye. When I stumbled across bunny running around in the frost, I had to stop and chase it to see if I might be able to catch it. The landscape made me want to explore everything and see how my actions would impact the storyline, if at all. The first area of the game was the most open by far, allowing me to wander around a gorgeous snow-covered mountainside. When I led the fox toward something on the ground-one of her cubs unmoving in the snow-I knew I was in for a pretty harrowing tale between Joseph and his dad. Though they appeared quite different on the surface, both narratives were intertwined around the same powerful themes. The dream conjured up memories of Joseph 's complicated, and often troubled, relationship with his own father, and as I continued the fox 's adventure, both parallel stories unfurled at once though his voiceovers. ![]() More and more, the dream was revealed as I played through an ongoing conversation between the couple. I quickly discovered that I was essentially playing the dream Joseph just woke from, about a fox in the wilderness searching for her lost cubs. As I made the little critter take its first steps, a conversation between a couple-Joseph and Rachel-began to play over the nature scene. The First Tree starts with a fox in the center of a snowy field between towering mountains, but I quickly discovered that the game wasn 't really about the fox at all. One of the latest to hit the console scene is The First Tree, created by one-man development team David Wehle.įrom the first frames of the game 's trailer, I knew it was something I 'd love to play, and was thrilled when I was offered a review key of the game for the Nintendo Switch to experience it for myself. I 've loved games including Firewatch, What Remains of Edith Finch and Gone Home, which involve exploring a space and slowly piecing together the bigger story with what 's discovered. As much as I love frenetic action games or puzzles that put my wits to the test, lately I 've been obsessed with video games that are all about the narrative. 8/26/2023 0 Comments Download armikrog switchThis adventure focuses on space exploration with a system of solving puzzles. In any case, I never felt like I’d chosen either the weakest, or the safest path, to get through Tiny Tina’s zany and almost incoherent narrative. In other words, I had the option of continuing with my tank-like Clawbringer path (which I did) or switching to a faster-paced, damage-per-second build with the Spellshot’s additional sorcery. I used the Spellshot’s perk tree to increase the strength of my magical attacks and ammo regeneration, but ignored its special ability - dual-wielding spells, which would have taken the place of the Clawbringer’s overwhelming hammer-smash attack. For example, I started as a Clawbringer, added Spellshot as my secondary class, and became a Warcaster. (And to capitalize on the 10 hours they’ve already spent playing.). Rather than remaking their build entirely, shrewd players can use their secondary class specialization to supplement their preferred offensive abilities. The Stabbomancer is a thief, or an assassin, and so on. The rest of the game’s mirthfully named classes easily revealed their D&D basic edition origins: The Spellshot is a magic-user (or a sniper, if you’re working from a guns assumption). I chose The Clawbringer because, parsing out the class’ base attributes and advantages (not the character’s appearance - that is fully customizable) it conformed to the paladin/cleric standard: lots of muscle, and spell-casting backed by blunt force trauma. It takes some reading between the lines to understand the classes’ strengths and weaknesses at first. The difference, in Wonderlands, is that players get to make a dual-class choice after the first third of the campaign. Still, this is a Borderlands game, which means it’s a class-based shooter, even if all classes can avail themselves of all gear at all times. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands ramps up the mobs’ rush attacks to encourage melee combat, which keeps encounters from breaking down into the kind of improvised cover-shooter stalemates I’ve seen in the first three games. In Wonderlands, they get to meet the broadsword, kama, or morningstar I looted two levels ago. Elsewhere in the Borderlands series, if an enemy made it within melee or point-blank range, I felt like I’d failed in my ambition of being a marksman or an assault trooper. All of this has anchors in Borderlands 2’s unexpectedly delightful expansion Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon’s Keep, in which the mischievous NPC also administers a game of “Bunkers & Badasses.”īy not taking its time or its space too seriously, the game leaves the user free to romp, roam, and plunder it likewise. A couple of transitions, from the mental space of the bright and colorful Wonderlands to the fluorescent bowels of a crippled spacecraft, quickly establish the idea that everyone is role-playing to pass the time until they’re rescued. In case story matters to you - and if it does, you might be in the wrong department - Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands puts the player in a pencil-and-paper campaign under the direction of Tina, the adolescent munitions expert introduced in Borderlands 2, leering behind the DM’s screen. When the franchise debuted that autumn, Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski hailed Borderlands as “ Diablo for a generation raised on first-person shooters.” Thirteen years later, they’ve perfected that vision by giving the franchise a richly detailed, high fantasy veneer, inside a canonically consequence-free science-fiction wrapper. It’s also a refreshing reintroduction to the things that made Borderlands such a personal obsession for me back in 2009. (Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images) Drew Angerer/Getty Images Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two cases challenging President Joe Bidens student loan debt forgiveness program, which remains on hold after a lower court blocked the plan in November. WASHINGTON, DC - FEBRUARY 28: People rally in support of the Biden administration's student debt relief plan in front of the the U.S. Gorsuch wrote that “the First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands.” He said Colorado sought to “deny that promise.” It is the latest victory for religious conservatives at the high court and will alarm critics who fear the current court is setting its sights on overturning the 2015 marriage case. The ruling – rooted in free speech grounds – will pierce state public accommodation laws for those businesses who sell so-called “expressive” goods. But under a Colorado public accommodations law, she said she cannot post the statement because the state considers it illegal. Lorie Smith, who runs a company called 303 Creative, sought to expand her business into the area of weddings and wrote a webpage explaining why she won’t create websites for same-sex couple. The court’s decision represents a devastating blow to LGBTQ protections, which have in recent years been bolstered by landmark decisions at the nation’s highest court, including one authored three years ago by Gorsuch in which the majority expanded protections for LGBTQ workers, and the 2015 case legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Justice Sonia Sotomayor penned a dissent joined by her liberal colleagues Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The 6-3 decision was penned by Justice Neil Gorsuch and joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas. The Supreme Court Friday ruled in favor of a Christian web designer in Colorado who refuses to create websites to celebrate same-sex weddings out of religious objections. He supports this by showing differences in the accounts among the four Gospels and differences between the accounts of the monarchies in Samuel/Kings and Chronicles as well as by identifying how origins stories in Genesis and Exodus seem shaped to explain the present at the time of the writers (during the Monarchy or the Exile). Second, Enns argues that the Biblical writers, rather than simply reporting the past, were actively shaping it in their accounts. However, the story of God moved on – to Jesus. According to Enns, God allowed Himself to be portrayed this way because “He lets His people tell their story.” The Israelites existed in a certain time and place and used the ideas available to them, which included the idea of God as a tribal warlord. That’s because God isn’t actually the kind of God that would order the death of the Canaanites – this was only how He was understood by the Israelites in their context. While most Bible readers, Enns writes, want to fill in the blank at the end of the phrase, “It’s a perfectly fine and right thing for God to order the extermination of Canaanites and take their land because _,” in fact this blank does not need to be filled in. However, as Enns works through specific examples to illustrate his descriptions, the controversial nature of his claims becomes clearer.įirst, Enns argues that God isn’t actually like the figure of God conveyed in the Old Testament when He orders the death the inhabitants of the land of Canaan. For Christians, many of the Old Testament Laws given to the Israelites are not understood to be “timelessly binding,” such as the command not to eat pork. ![]() It’s clear that many parts of the Bible are not rules, such as the poetic Psalms, and that the biblical works weren’t “downloaded” but were written down by people at particular points in history. ![]() Enns uses a collection of vague terms and phrases to describe what he believes are wrong views of the Bible: “rulebook” and “truth downloaded from heaven” and “a point-by-point exhaustive and timelessly binding list of instructions about God and the life of faith.” According to Enns, these are all wrong ways of talking about the Bible.Īnd most Christians would agree. I read it in one sitting the evening after I received it as a Christmas present.Īnother reason the book doesn’t seem controversial is that the view of the Bible it claims to support isn’t, on the surface, too different than what most Christians actually believe. It’s a light-hearted, humorous read aimed for popular audiences, with chapter titles such as “Jesus Was Actually Jewish (Go Figure)” and “God Seems Like a Regular Joe.” It’s entertaining. In addition to losing his job, Enns left his conservative church community for an Episcopal church because, as he writes in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” forum, “Sometimes you have to find new communities of faith (as I did) where who you are is valued, not demeaned.” Enns now teaches at Eastern University and maintains a blog called “Rethinking Biblical Christianity.”Īt first glance, The Bible Tells Me So doesn’t seem too controversial. ![]() In 2008, Enns was suspended from his tenured position at the conservative Christian school Westminster Theological Seminary, following a two-year theological debate regarding his 2005 book Inspiration and Incarnation: Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament. When Enns was suspended, the chairman of WTS’ board told Christianity Today that Enns’ book failed to affirm the school’s standards of faith, namely the Westminster Confession of Faith, because the view of the Bible in the book did not fall within the bounds of the doctrine of biblical inerrancy. It’s a controversial book from a controversial author. Rather than try to explain away these difficulties, Enns says, Christians should accept the Bible as it is: “messy, trouble, weird, and ancient.” In his new book The Bible Tells Me So: Why Defending Scripture Has Made Us Unable to Read It, Enns claims that rather than being a “rulebook” or a “spiritual owner’s manual,” as he claims many Christians believe, the Bible is an “inspired model for our own spiritual journey.” To support this view, he takes readers on a tour through the Old and New Testaments, pointing out God’s violent commands during the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan, the presence of diverse views of God and what it means to follow Him across biblical passages, and the lack of historical evidence to confirm biblical accounts of the past. What is the Bible? The Word of God? Inspired? Inerrant? Infallible? Truth? None of the above?Īccording to biblical scholar Peter Enns, many Christians are wrong about the nature of the book they consider Scripture. |
